Powerlifting is a dynamic strength sport that challenges athletes to lift as much weight as possible in three specific lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Unlike Weightlifting which focuses on the snatch and clean and jerk, or CrossFit where athletes are tested in a wide variety of movements; Powerlifting is all about sheer strength and technique. Whether you're new to the sport or an experienced lifter, understanding the intricacies of powerlifting can help you appreciate its demands and rewards.
Understanding Powerlifting
Powerlifting is centered around three main lifts:
Squat: This lift tests the strength of your lower body and core. The athlete must lower their body until the hip joint is below the knee joint, then return to a standing position.
Bench Press: Focusing on upper body strength, this involves pressing a barbell from the chest upwards while lying on a bench.
Deadlift: A true measure of overall body strength, the deadlift requires lifting a barbell from the ground to hip level, then lowering it back down in a controlled manner.
The sport of Powerlifting is not new. It has been around for decades as a true test of ones strength. For you, it can be a new way to express all the hard work you put in day in and day out in the gym. This week we are starting a workshop series to learn techniques involved in each lift, the judge cues, and strategize what your attempts will be come meet day.
November 16th at 9am -Squat workshop.
November 23rd at 9am - Bench Press workshop.
November 30th at 9am - Deadlift workshop.
December 7th at 3pm - Powerlifting Meet.
These workshops are open to anyone that would like to learn more and challenge yourself.
The meet on December 7th is a non sanctioned meet which means that it is ‘unofficial’ The records you break will be your own personal bests. In order to compete at a sanctioned meet, you must be a member of the federation that you are competing in, only use approved equipment, attend weigh ins, and potentially be drug tested. In a non sanctioned meet- our goal is introduce the sport and have a ton of fun.
But Sarah- we have peak week in our classes and we regularly test our strength, how is this any different?
In our CrossFit and Strength and Conditioning classes we are striving for general fitness. We want to be strong, but also fast, flexible, and conditioned. This sets up a class to build to a max and then move on to the next aspect of the programming. With this meet day- there is no next aspects of a class, the goal is to find your absolute max and rest up to 10 minutes between lift attempts.
